The Friendly City

Port Elizabeth, often shortened to PE or also nicknamed “The Windy City”, and also “Die Baai” ( “the Bay” ), she stretches for 16 km along Algoa Bay in the Eastern Cape, and is one South Africa’s largest seaports.

Home to several fantastic beaches, Port Elizabeth is located at the eastern end of the Garden Route and is a popular destinations for tourists, what with its proximity to the Addo Elephant National Park. The third largest national park in South Africa, Addo is just 45 miles (72 kilometres) to the north of PE, near the Zuurberg mountain range and, as the name suggests, hosts plenty of elephants, over 550 at last count. However, the park is also home to lion, buffalo, black rhino, spotted hyena, leopard, antelope and zebra. Part of the SAN parks group, you’ll find the park’s prices quite reasonable.

If you enjoy water sports, Port Elizabeth is the place for you.

In fact, it’s known locally as the water sports capital of South Africa and also hosts the Ironman of Africa event at Hobie Beach. There’s scuba diving, game fishing charters and plenty of cruises from the harbour – from sunset cruises to dolphin viewing and whale watching. In addition, The Windy City has many great surfing, windsurfing and kite boarding spots.

Fantastic beaches and close to Grahamstown, home of the infamous Grahamstown Festival.

Named after the Acting Governor’s wife Lady Elizabeth in 1861, it became a City in 1913. There are also plenty of historic attractions, many around or close to the city centre. Many can be explored on a self-guided walking tour – the three mile Donkin Heritage Trail links 47 places of historical interest, including the Campanile (bell tower) which commemorates the arrival of the 1820 Settlers and offers a great view of the city.
